LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A bicyclist was sent to the hospital with critical injuries Thursday morning after being hit by a vehicle in the central Las Vegas Valley.

According to Las Vegas Metro police, officers responded to the 4200 block of Arville Street, just south of Flamingo Road, at 7:46 a.m. The bicyclist was traveling northbound on Arville when he was hit by a Chevrolet Malibu at a high rate of speed.

The driver suspected in the crash drove away from the scene but was followed by a witness and later apprehended in the area of Twain Avenue and Stober Boulevard.

Police said the man on the bicycle was transported to University Medical Center.

The driver failed field sobriety tests and was booked for driving under the influence with substantial bodily harm and  hit-and-run with injury.

Metro's Fatal Detail investigators were called to the scene. Traffic on Arville was closed between Harmon and Rochelle avenues.
