LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

As students get ready to head back to school, local groups are getting ready for the most dangerous time for pedestrians, in what's already been a very deadly year for Clark County.

"The fall to the end of the year is the worst time for pedestrian safety," Erin Breen, of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' Vulnerable Road Users Project, explained. She said so far there have been 32 pedestrian fatalities in 2016. That's more than the number of deaths at the same time in 2015 and it's on pace for a deadly record.

"We are eight pedestrian fatalities ahead of last year in Clark County," Breen said. "We are, right now, in record territory."

This week several local groups are teaming up to teach students and parents how to get to school safely for The Zero Fatalities for Children week.

"We've brought together lots and lots of partners, this is the third year that we've done this. Metro police, highway patrol, school district police, trauma centers, other advocacy groups," Breen said.

There are events every day this week, and each covers everything from bikers to booster seats.

"Trying to cover all the ways that every age of student gets to school so we make sure they get there safely," Breen said.

The week begins Monday at 10:30 a.m. with a bike and helmet safety event at Las Vegas Indoor Sports. On Tuesday, Western High School Front Lot will host a bus safety event. Wednesday, Clark County School District police, Las Vegas Metro police and Nevada Highway Patrol will step up enforcement at Boulder Highway and Sun Valley to stress the importance of yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks. Thursday, there will be a teen driving event at Cimarron Memorial High School, and on Friday experts will discuss seat belt and booster seat rules for children. The location for Friday's event has not been decided.
