Climber dies after fall at Zion National Park in Utah

Posted: Updated:

A climber died Wednesday afternoon after suffering a fall at Zion National Park in southern Utah, the federal park said.

The climber was seen traversing a popular 1,200-foot technical route at the outdoor attraction called Moonlight Buttress on the west side of the canyon, according to the National Park Service. Two other climbers saw the fall and promptly informed park rangers.

The climber, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A very sad situation," said Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh. "Our condolences go out to the individual's friends and family."

The Washington County Sheriff's Office and the National Park Service are investigating the incident.
