LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

March is big business for Las Vegas. It’s one major sporting event after another, and all the excitement puts people in the mood to spend.

Not only does the month kick off with NASCAR weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the USA Sevens International Rugby Tournament takes over at Sam Boyd Stadium.

“Everyone who lives here also benefits from the tourism that happens,” said Heidi Hayes with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

In addition to racing and rugby, Las Vegas is this weekend hosting UFC 196 and the WCC Basketball Championship.

“With those four sporting events, we have about 250,000 people just going to those events, so that equals about $117 million in direct visitor spending,” Hayes said.

That spending includes shopping, dining and entertainment.

“We’ll party a little, hit the Strip, hit the slots, and hopefully get lucky,” said Leo Fanene, who’s visiting from Seattle for the rugby tournament.

United World’s Rob Cornelius said it takes about a year to organize the rugby tournament.

“It’s a long process but well worth it, and we continue to grow, so each year we have a 15 percent growth increase. The economic impact for our city grows each year. We want to keep it in Vegas,” he said.

The LVCVA anticipates about 64,000 people will attend the rugby tournament, 22,000 of whom will be from out of town.
