Pyrotechnicians putting finishing touches on NYE fireworks

Posted: Updated:

As midnight hits on New Year's eve, Las Vegas will be the stage to the largest firework show in the nation.

A whole year of planning will culminate on the rooftops of seven casinos from the Stratosphere down south to MGM Grand.

Phil Grucci with Fireworks by Grucci began planning the 2016 display as soon as last year's ended.

He says the show is eight minutes and 18 seconds long.

A team of over 50 pyrotechnicians spent Wednesday and Thursday linking 80,000 effects together, all to be controlled by panels at Rio on the big night.

This year's theme is "On Top of the World," lead by the song "I'm On Top of the World" by Imagine Dragons.

Each additional song on the playlist will highlight each of the casinos they are taking off from.

One concern that Grucci faces every year is the wind speeds--forecasted wind is ten to 15 miles per hour while the cut-off is 10.

He says in years past, winds have always slowed down just in time for the show and he hopes they will this year, too.

If you want to follow along with the music and countdown, the company has designed an app called "Fireworks by Grucci" where you can listen live to the countdown and music while watching the light show.
