LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A suicidal man holding a rifle died after being confronted by Las Vegas Metro police early Wednesday morning.

Metro said officers responded to the Eagle Trace apartment complex in the 5300 block of Craig Road, near Las Vegas Boulevard North, on reports of an armed person inside a unit about 12:20 a.m.

According to police, the person, who was dressed in military-style clothing, threatened to kill responding officers. The man fired a rifle in the air during the initial response, prompting SWAT officers to be called to the scene.

During the incident, the person opened fire again from outside of his apartment. He also shot into an apartment believed to be occupied at the time. Police said a SWAT marksman shot the armed person, killing the gunman.

Police identified the armed person only as a 43-year-old white man. A spokesperson with Nellis Air Force Base, which is located near the apartment complex, confirmed the man had served in the military. However, that spokesperson wouldn't confirm in which branch the man served. Metro is expected to release the identity of the officer who shot the gunman.

The Clark County Coroner's Office was also assigned to identify the gunman.
