MOAPA, NV (FOX5) -

The worst flash flooding in more than three decades occurred in northeast Clark County on Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS issued a rare flash flood emergency until 9 p.m. for the Moapa, Mesquite, Bunkerville and Littlefield areas, calling the situation "life-threatening." A flood warning was in effect into Tuesday morning.

According to the weather agency, more than 3 inches of rain fell in Moapa within an hour and the Seegmiller Dam was 3 inches away from being breached. Dozens of roads in the area are flooded.

Evacuations were ordered for people living in the Moapa River Indian Reservation.

Officials said Monday's flooding was the worst to happen in the area since Aug. 10, 1981.

On Monday evening, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) closed the following roads due to flooding, debris on the roadway or erosion due to rushing water.

  • Interstate 15 at mile marker 91, near Moapa
  • Interstate 15 at mile marker 92, near Overton and Logandale
  • State Route 168 between Coyote Springs and Moapa
  • U.S. 95 at mile marker 1, the Laughlin junction

NDOT officials said those stretches could be closed for several days and asked that drivers avoid them if possible.

More than 100 students in the Moapa Valley could not safely be transported home on Monday. Most of them were being housed at Ute Perkins Elementary School in Moapa. Clark County School District announced eight schools in northeast Clark County would be closed Tuesday due to power outages.
