Labor Day proved to be a unique opportunity for firefighters from Scottsdale Engine 601.  The crew was driving south on Pima Road approaching McDowell Road when they noticed a dog in the irrigation ditch to the east struggling to get out.

"He looked like he was real tired. He looked like he'd probably been in there for a while. The pads of his paws were pretty worn. You could tell that it was real, real slippery and that he'd been struggling for quite some time. He'd kind of given up at that point," said Capt. Sasha Weller of the Scottsdale Fire Department.

Several firefighters rigged up some gear and pulled the dog out. He appeared to be a puppy, under a year old, that was part pit bull and perhaps part Labrador, according to the firefighters.

Weller said the dog was so exhausted when they first pulled him out that he could not stand on his own. He added that the dog had been in the water so long he appeared cold.

"He was just so fatigued. So, we picked him up, put him in the fire truck and brought him to the fire station and got some food and water in him and hopefully nurse him back to health," said Weller.

The dog had no collar or name tag and he was not neutered. The crew from Engine 601 dubbed the dog "Dale."

"Scotts-Dale, you know? So, that's what he got," said Weller.

But Dale got more than a name. He got a new lease on life.

Dale was limping and was scraped up from trying to scratch his way out of the irrigation ditch. Firefighters called the Arizona Humane Society who they hoped would check out the dog medically, see if he is chipped and work at getting him a home.

"It's kind of a cool deal. You help an animal out. You don't get to do that every day. You know, everybody's got a pet. Pets are people too, kind of thing. So it's a cool day," said Weller.
