Good Samaritan saves children trapped in house fire

Posted: Updated:

Eddie Hamilton didn't hesitate when he found out a nearby neighbor's house was on fire and three children were trapped inside.

"They were at the window screaming when I knocked it out. I just told them to back up. I knocked it out and got them out," he said.

The fire happened just before 8 a.m. Monday. The children's mother got out and was screaming for help. Hamilton immediately rescued a 10-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl.

"They kept hollering somebody else in there," Hamilton said. "I jumped in the window and crawled across the floor until I found him and drug him to the window."

By that time, Hamilton said, the house was filled with smoke.

"You couldn't see nothing, you couldn't breathe inside. I came to the window twice, got air crawled back in there again until I could find [him]," he said. "I could hear him moaning, he wasn't all the way out."

Hamilton found the 17-year-old and pulled him to a window but the teenager was too big for Hamilton to get out. By that time, DeKalb County Firefighters arrived and took the teen to safety.

The firefighters and his wife credit Hamilton with saving the children.

"He fell into action this morning," Hamilton's wife said, "and I'm very proud of him. I am."

The two younger children had minor injuries. The 17-year old was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

For Hamilton the ordeal was frightening, but if he had to he would do it again.

"I don't drink but I sure could use one today!" he said.
