PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Folk musician Joe Bethancourt died Thursday after a monthslong illness. He was 68.

Bethancourt, born in El Paso, TX, began learning the banjo when he was 9.

In the 1980s, he was a regular on KPHO's Wallace and Ladmo Show, where he'd play odd instruments.  

For almost 17 years, he was the house band at Funny Fellows restaurant at 19th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

He was able to play at least 65 different instruments.
