PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A retired Phoenix police sergeant accused of having child porn on his computer has pleaded not guilty.

Robert Carrillo, 61, entered his plea Monday. His next court date is set for Oct. 29.

As many as 8,000 sexually inappropriate images of girls, some as young as 2, were found by police investigators on a flash drive belonging to Carrillo, who was arrested at his Chandler home Aug. 29, a court document stated.

Carrillo was taken into custody by investigators with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, who served a search warrant at his home near Kyrene and Ray roads.

A court document obtained Tuesday revealed detectives uncovered thousands of images depicting minors in sexual positions, and "that meets the criteria of sexual exploitation of a minor."

Police said Carrillo invoked his Fifth Amendment right and was not questioned by detectives. He was booked into a Maricopa County jail and faces 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

Officers interviewed witnesses who said some of the images were of girls between 2 to 4 years old on a beach wearing some clothing. The witnesses called the photos inappropriate.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos said Carrillo was a respected officer who spent many years in the property crimes division.

"There's nothing at this point, that I've been made aware of, that there was a history of this - or something that would have sent up a red flag indicating that he would have been involved in this," said Martos.

A court document stated another witness who found the images on Carrillo's laptop described the girls as nude and as young as 2 to 3 years old.

The witness said she found other images in the recycle bin of naked girls between 2 to 3 years old posing in various sexual positions, the court document stated.

Police investigators said one of the images depicted a fully nude girl under age 12 who was pinned down by black restraints on her arms and legs.

The arresting officer recommended a bond of no less than $250,000.

"Any time we look at these crimes that involve children, the elderly or the most vulnerable, we take them very seriously," said Martos. "To us, it doesn't matter who may be involved - we're going to investigate."

Phoenix Police confirmed Carrillo retired this spring after serving 37 years with the department.

Carrillo collects a pension of more than $6,200 a month.
