PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A car struck a power pole before bursting into flames and left 420 customers, including the St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance, without power much of the morning.

A red Mercury sedan hit the pole at the intersection of 31st Avenue and Thomas Road about 4 a.m. and caught fire, Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

The driver ran but was caught by police and taken to a hospital with injuries from the crash, Thompson said.

Arizona Public Service restored power by 8 a.m., but it disrupted the normal delivery schedule for the food bank, spokesman Jerry Brown said.

The freezers and coolers held their temperatures, Brown said, though another two or three hours with the increasing heat of the day would have had created an adverse situation.

Brown said Friday is one of the busiest days for delivery, and volunteers were unable to get to the food bank.

Brown said the food bank would welcome anyone willing to volunteer a few hours Friday at the distribution building at 3131 W. Thomas Rd.

Volunteers can call St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance at 602-242-3663.

Thompson said the driver of the car would be charged upon his release from the hospital.
