TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Authorities arrested two people and seized more than $200,000 worth of methamphetamine and cocaine in separate smuggling attempts at the Port of Nogales, according to Customs and Border Protection officers.

First, CBP officers and a narcotics detection canine at the Dennis DeConcini crossing searched a Honda minivan driven by 25-year-old Karen Lizabeth Almada of Nogales, Arizona on Monday, Aug. 25. They found nearly 17 pounds of meth and five pounds of cocaine hidden in a rear quarter-panel, estimated to be worth more than $183,000, according to a news release.

Officers and a drug detection canine then searched a Ford SUV at the Mariposa crossing on Tuesday and located about 14 pounds of meth, worth $43,000, in the rear seats of the car. Officers said the driver, 29-year-old Jose Alfredo Valencia-Dominguez, is from Sonora, Mexico.

Officers referred them to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations and seized the vehicles and drugs.
