ANOKA COUNTY, MN (CNN) – The American killed while repeatedly fighting for rebel groups in Syria has a past criminal record.
Douglas McArthur McCain was charged in 2003 with marijuana possession and driving with a suspended license.
He was arrested and booked by Anoka County Sheriffs in Minnesota.
A family member says McArthur McCain traveled to Syria to fight as a Jihadi, having converted to Islam several years ago.
The family maintains they had no knowledge he was going to join the fight in Syria.
