SACRAMENTO, CA (CNN) - California health officials say a patient hospitalized at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento has tested negative for the Ebola virus.

"This week, the California Dept. of Public Health assisted the Sacramento Co. Public Health Dept. and Kaiser Permanente in obtaining Ebola virus testing for a patient who had recently traveled to West Africa. We're happy to report that we've heard from the Centers for Disease Control that the test result is negative," said Dr. Ron Chapman, of the California Department of Public Health.

The patient's identity has not been released, and it's unclear what prompted the patient to seek medical attention.

No Ebola cases have been confirmed in the United States.

Four countries in Africa are experiencing an Ebola outbreak.
