HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

As a Missouri city's law enforcement is stripped of its duties by state highway patrol, and anger over an unarmed man's death continues to grow, Huntsville residents joined a nationwide initiative to share in a moment of silence - a silent prayer for peace and a life cut short.

According to the Associated Press, Missouri State Attorney General Eric Holder has said federal investigators have interviewed eyewitnesses to the shooting of Michael Brown by Ferguson city police. Residents there have complained about police response to public protests, which had escalated progressively since the Saturday incident.

Thursday night, students and administrators of Oakwood University joined communities across the country to hold a moment of silence for Brown, for the city of Ferguson, and for communities everywhere.

Before the silence, the voices of many could be heard on the university campus, each clearly pleading for justice and ultimately for calm. Streaks of red ribbons and cloth began to be seen on virtually every wrist - a nonverbal show of support.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," said one attendee.

"People are coming together for a peaceful demonstration to remember the lives, the innocent lives that were lost," said another.

The gathering, many said, was to show solidarity with Brown and his surviving family - a stand for peace, not for continued violence; for safety and security, and not fear.

In the words of another person at the vigil, "We take a stand for life."
