LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

University of Nevada, Las Vegas will face off against historic college football stalwart The Ohio State University for the first time in the program's history come 2017.

The school's athletics department announced Thursday a deal that will pit the Rebels and the Buckeyes in each school's first matchup with each other. The game will take place Sept. 23, 2017 at the Ohio Stadium in Columbus, OH.

UNLV said the game will mark the fifth such matchup with a member of the Big Ten Conference. The team scheduled a tilt with University of Michigan in 2015.

On top of the matchup, the school said UNLV will make $1.3 million from the game against Ohio State, which tops the $1-million payout it will receive for the game against the Wolverines in Ann Arbor, MI.

"We are looking at signing one guarantee game every couple of seasons and Ohio State is a great fit for 2017," said UNLV Director of Athletics Tina Kunzer-Murphy. "It will be an exciting trip for our team and fans for the Rebels to play at the famed Horseshoe."

UNLV also announced Thursday a guaranteed home-and-home series with Arkansas State University. The first of the series will take place in September 2017 in Las Vegas while the backend will take place in Jonesboro, AR, in 2018.

The Rebels open their season on Aug. 29 against University of Arizona. The team opens its home slate against Northern Colorado on Sept. 6.
