CCSD accepting applications for free and reduced-price meals

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

On Monday, the Clark County School District (CCSD) began accepting applications from families of students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals.

If your child received free or reduced breakfast and lunch during the last school year, you must register again this year.

Virginia Beck with CCSD's Food Services Department said need is on the rise. During the last school year, just over 60 percent of students in the district were signed up for the program.

"Looking at the economy, I think we will have an increase. At the end of last year, we were just a hair over 60 percent on free and reduced, and it's going to remain at that or go higher," Beck said.

Fortunately, extra help is available. A program that launched two years ago will remain in place this school year. Students who qualify for reduced meals will receive a free lunch. In addition, Three Square Food Bank has partnered with the school district to send students home with backpacks full of food.

"Nearly all schools in Clark County participate in the backpack program, which provides schools with enough bags to be able to give to students that are very high-risk. Maybe they are homeless, or maybe their families are just going through a really tough time and need some help to provide enough nutrition for their kids," said Jodi Tyson with Three Square Food Bank.

"When a child is hungry, often times the whole family is hungry, so we also want to make sure that families know about food pantries and where they can go to secure some really [healthful] staple items that they can keep at their homes so they can prepare their own meals," Tyson continued.

Qualification for free and reduced meals is based on a sliding scale of a family's income.
