LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

While there's little time left to settle a staffing shortage of hundreds, Clark County School District is expected to orient more than 1,200 teachers who are new to the fifth largest district in the country.

On Wednesday, the school district is holding its annual new teacher onboarding event at the Venetian hotel-casino.

CCSD said about 1,200 teachers and 350 long-term substitutes were hired during the summer for a school district trying to reduce classroom sizes. As of Monday, the district was still seeking about 600 teachers to fill vacancies before the school year starts on August 25.

The district also expressed plans on certifying substitutes who hold Bachelor's degrees to permanent teaching roles.

Still, if not enough teachers are hired by the time classes start, there is a possibility of added workload for current educators.

"Rather than teaching five classes and having one class of prep, a teacher agrees to pick up a sixth class," said Dr. Staci Vesneske, CCSD Human Resource Officer. "So, there are some ways we can do that. There are some alternative staffing models."

CCSD said the extra workload, though, will be at the principal's discretion.

To illustrate the scope of CCSD's search for teachers, the school district said it was not only looking locally for their teachers. Administrators have had to sell candidates nationwide on the brand.

CCSD's onboarding event begins Wednesday and runs through Thursday.
