(CNN) - The Federal Aviation Administration has banned U.S. airlines from flying over Iraqi airspace.

The FAA issued the notice Friday. They stated it was due to the "hazardous situation created by the armed conflict" in the country.

The move came just as the U.S. resumed airstrikes in Iraq. President Barack Obama pulled most American forces out in 2011.

The airspace ban will be re-evaluated Dec. 31.

In July, a commercial Malaysia Airlines flight crashed while flying over another war-torn area in eastern Ukraine. The U.S. government said a surface-to-air missile brought down the plane.
