Metro announces results of sex trafficking sting

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

On Thursday, Metro police announced results of a sting operation which focused on the sex trade as part of a national crackdown.

The National Day of Johns Arrests operation took place in 59 agencies across 14 states and focused on the demand side of illegal prostitution - the johns.

"We're looking to get the johns, or persons who use prostitutes and work on the exploitation of women and children, to curb that type of criminal trend on the streets," said Metro Officer Larry Hadfield.

The operation ran for 18 days, ending Aug. 3.

A variety of Metro stings during that time resulted in:

  • 19 "John" arrests
  • 3 sex trafficking arrests
  • 2 arrests for prostitution theft
  • 153 arrests that were prostitution related
  • 3 search warrants served

Many perceive prostitution is a victimless crime, but that myth is broken with two additional startling statistics from the operation:

  • 8 adult victims of sex trafficking identified
  • 8 minor victims of sex trafficking identified

"Anytime you impact somebody's life, taking them outside of the crime or lifestyle, in particular the young persons in this type of lifestyle, you're saving a life," Hadfield said.

Nationally, the operation resulted in more arrests than any previous sex sting of its kind, according to operation officials. Almost 500 johns were booked, 53 percent of which were married and 47 percent were college graduates.

Metro told us the Strip is not a place where anything goes.

"If you see something, say something. If something is unusual, you see a lot of foot traffic that's unusual in an area for such activity, go ahead and call the [Metro] so we can check out what's going on," Hadfield said.

Nationally, 111 prostitutes were recovered, including 13 juveniles.
