(RNN) - A U.S. General was killed in Afghanistan in an attack by a gunman wearing an Afghan military uniform at a training facility in Kabul, Afghanistan. Maj. Gen. Harold Greene served for 34 years.

The assailant, who was wearing an Afghan military uniform, was killed.

The death of the general is one of the highest ranked service members to be killed since 9/11.

About and about 15 coalition troops were injured - including Americans and a German brigadier general. 

Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, stated that the attacker was a member of the Afghan military.

The attack happened at Marshal Fahim National Defense University at a base west of Kabul. Coalition troops were visiting the facility.
