Julio strengthens again into hurricane, remains far north of isles

Posted: Updated:
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Julio restrengthened into a hurricane late Monday, but is expected to weaken once again far north of Hawaii, forecasters said.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center said Julio had maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour with higher gusts. It was located 560 miles north of Honolulu and was moving to the northwest at 7 miles per hour.

Forecasters said Julio should turn northward over the next 24 hours, and then turn northeast Thursday. Weakening is expected Wednesday and Thursday.

Swells generated by hurricane Julio will continue to produce high surf along east facing shores of most Hawaiian islands today. The surf will gradually diminish tonight and Tuesday.

Julio was the fifth hurricane of the 2014 Eastern North Pacific Season, which runs through November 30.
