PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A burglary suspect perched on a rooftop was shot and killed by Phoenix police after an exchange of gunfire early Sunday morning at a condominium complex.

Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said no officers were hurt.

Police received a 911 call about a suspected burglary at a condo near 35th and Northern avenues at about 2 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found the suspect standing on the roof of a shed with a gun, Martos said.

Officers began issuing commands, which the suspect ignored, Martos said. The gunman jumped off the shed and shot at fully uniformed officers, Martos said.

Police shot back. The gunman, who hasn't yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was described as a Hispanic man in his 20s.

At least five officers were involved, ranging in age from 31 to 48, according to Martos.

"At this point, they'll (the officers) be placed on administrative leave," Martos said.

Police detectives were still processing the scene at daybreak.

No other information was available.
