EL DORADO COUNTY, CA (KOVR/CNN) - The Stephensons got the door knock they never wanted on Friday.

“The sheriff came to the door and said you have to evacuate now,” Dolores Stephenson said.

They were told they must leave their home as the Sand Fire continues to spread.

Their plea to firefighters: “Save my home,” Miriam Stephenson said. They packed their cars and headed out to a friend's house as fire trucks rushed by.

Jon Sanders decided he had enough time to water down his home before heading out.

“I got all my stuff loaded, my trucks pointed on the driveway. All I can do is prevention at this point,” he said.

He says this isn't the first time a fire has threatened his property.

“There was one right down there before. I thought it was coming this way,” he said.

Others grabbed what they could and rushed out, leaving behind their farm animals.

The evacuation leaves families terrified that, when they come back, what they once called home will no longer exist.

“I'm hoping they'll stop it,” Miriam Stephenson said. “That's all I can pray for.”

As of Friday, the Sand Fire was burning 45 miles east of Sacramento without containment. The fire tripled in size on Saturday, according to the Associated Press, fueled by strong winds.
