Henderson has its own booze district

Posted: Updated:

There's a business park in Henderson that looks like any other in the Valley from the outside. But on the inside a new industry is crafting its own niche - alcohol.

"We thought, if it's not here then let's build it," said Wyndee Forrest of CraftHaus Brewery.

"Took a risk, but I think it paid off," said Nathan Hall of Bad Beat Brewery.

Five spirited businesses are creating their own Booze District with three breweries, a wine school and the Las Vegas Distillery, which was the first to arrive to the park, which is off Warm Springs and Eastgate, in 2011.

"When you are the first little bird it is very difficult to survive, it was day-by-day surviving," said distillery owner George Racz.

Three years ago, Racz could only sell his vodka, whiskey, gin and moonshine to distributors. He struggled until he wrote a bill that was signed by Gov. Brian Sandoval last June.

"That bill saved the business," said Racz.

The distillery can now hold tours, tastings and sell products directly to locals.

What that bill started the breweries are continuing.

Bad Beat Brewery opened July 11 with a line 50 locals deep.

"Here we are a couple weeks later and the community is really responding to us," said Hall.

Hall went all-in, selling his house to fund the poker-themed tavern with brews named "Ante Up Ale" and "Ace In The Hole."

"We just finished setting up with Southern Wine and Spirits, our distributor, so we'll have beer out to restaurants, bars and grocery stores in 22 ounce bottles soon," said Hall.

Steps away, CraftHaus Brewery is finishing construction and is set to open in about a month.

"We're hoping to put out a thousand barrels in our first year and there's room to grow," said head brewer Steph Cope.

In the past, a license to serve alcohol had to include gaming and food. CraftHaus helped create a new license to tap into a new market.

"We deliberately chose to not have gaming because it detracted people from talking to one another and from building a community so the city of Henderson worked with us hand in hand," said Forrest.

Vegas Brewing also is slated to open in the same business park sometime this year.
