(CNN) - An Air Algerie flight that disappeared from radar early Thursday crashed in eastern Mali, according to a tweet by the airline.

The company said flight AH5017 came down in the region of Tilemsi, near the southeastern city of Gao.

At least 116 people were on board.

The plane was headed from the west African nation of Burkina Faso to Algeria.

The airline's operator said it lost radar contact about 50 minutes after takeoff.

The plane belongs to a private Spanish company, Swiftair, but it appears to have been operated by Air Algerie.
