Albany youth baseball team headed to World Series

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - With just a few weeks before school starts back up, an Albany youth baseball team is hoping to end their summer breaks with a bang.

The Albany Dizzy Dean 12U All-Stars will travel to Southaven, MS for the Dizzy Dean World Series this weekend. The team won the South Georgia State Championship in June to qualify.

"This is a good team. This is a special team," says head coach Mitch Summerell. "These boys are really the total package, so I think we're bringing the best we can possibly take."

These players know one another well, since they've played together since tee ball.

But they will be inexperienced at the World Series. It's the team's first season in this division, and first trip to the World Series.

They don't know exactly what to expect, but they do know they are playing for south Georgia.

"We're representing south Georgia. That's a pretty big accomplishment," says outfielder Holman Deriso.  "Going to the World Series, that's big."

The team leaves for Mississippi Thursday, and the tournament begins Friday.
