Vehikl, one of Waterloo's veteran web app development shops, has just returned from Laracon NYC. Laracon is an annual conference that showcases developers for the PHP framework Laravel. "Laravel is more than a framework; it's an ecosystem to develop great web applications," says Paul Veldman, Startup Connector for Vehikl.
Vehikl acts as a 'Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for hire' for startups in Waterloo who have great ideas for web-based applications but don't have the technical resources to build their ideas.
For the Vehikl team, the trip to New York was illuminating. The team spent their time talking with other PHP developers and networking with companies outside of Canada. "It was great to meet a lot of the people I've collaborated with online and see some of the cool projects they are working on," says Adam Wathan, one of Vehikl's software developers. "Paul and I had a lot of meetings with potential customers in New York as well," says Chris Keithlin, one of Vehikl's co-founders, "There will be a lot of work flowing back to Waterloo region from New York."
This was a major step for Vehikl. Through networking inside and outside of the conference, they were putting Waterloo on the map: "We weren't just representing Vehikl, but Waterloo as a whole. We were the only ones there," says Paul, "We didnt go just for us, we went for the community because we want to keep it growing."
The future is looking bright for Vehikl. They have become the representatives of Laravel North of the border: "We are trying to pick up the flag and promote it in Canada, says Adam, Ontarios startup community is constantly growing."
Vehikl had an amazing time networking at the New York conference, and have already set their sites on the next one in Amsterdam: "Weve gone from Waterloo, to the US, and now on to Europe, says Paul, Who knows where we will go from there."
