Interstate 215 reopened after big rig jackknifes

HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

The eastbound lanes of Interstate 215 in Henderson reopened after a big rig jackknifed in a pre-dawn accident Tuesday.

Trooper Jeremie Elliot of Nevada Highway Patrol said the incident happened about 4:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-215 near Gibson Road.

According to Elliot, the tractor trailer struck the center median, throwing debris into the westbound lanes. The debris caused a two-vehicle crash on the westbound interstate.

In addition, two cars and another tractor trailer tried to avoid the big rig in the eastbound lanes, Elliot said. The cars crashed off to the side of the highway while the trailer drove into rocks and got stuck.

NHP reported no injuries from the wrecks stemming from the jackknifed big rig.

Elliot said about 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from the big rig, resulting in a blockage on the freeway. A cleanup forced eastbound traffic to be diverted at the Stephanie Street exit.

Travel speeds returned to normal by midday Tuesday.
