One injured in overnight central Toledo shooting

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Police are investigating after an overnight shooting at the corner of Nebraska and Hawley in central Toledo following a confrontation that occurred at Howard's Convenience Store at that location.

The victim was found on Tecumseh Street, not far from the intersection.

Officials say store owner Bobby Howard called 911 after he shot Jerold Evans. Howard told police he got in an argument with Evans and then Evans pulled out a gun and started making threats.

Howard says he fired the first shot and Evans took off. Medics found Evans on Tecumseh Street with a gunshot wound in his back. He was transported to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Police say although he is injured, Evans will be held responsible for the shooting.

"At this time, he'll be charged with aggravated menacing and CCW, but the investigation continues so more possible charges could come forth," said TPD Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

Evans is only 18 and has already faced several charges in court, including resisting arrest, assault, and aggravated menacing after police say he threatened to shoot his girlfriend.

"As soon as he gets well enough to talk to officers and well enough to go to jail, then that's what will happen," Heffernan said.

Evans currently has five open warrants: two for the Tuesday shooting and three traffic warrants.
