LAS VEGAS (FOX5/AP) -

Police said they are trying to determine how a 12-year-old Boy Scout from Las Vegas who died during a camping trip in San Diego obtained a gun.

San Diego police said that when officers arrived at the campsite Monday morning, they found the boy inside a tent, suffering from gunshot wounds to his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene. They said a handgun was found near the boy.

The boy on Tuesday was identified by San Diego police as William Shook.

William was part of a Boy Scout troop from Las Vegas that arrived in San Diego on Sunday for a weeklong camping trip, according to police.

Detectives said they are conducting interviews with witnesses to figure out how the boy got his hands on a gun.

Boy Scouts of America called it an "extremely sad day" and said counselors were at the camp. Spokesman Deron Smith said the organization does not allow firearms at its events.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
