2nd fastest growing city in Illinois

MELROSE PARK, Ill., June 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Village of Melrose Park today cited a new study as proof its community is one of the most vibrant and diverse in the entire state and attracting a record number of young people looking for a good place to raise their families.

"Melrose Park has worked successfully to develop a family-oriented community," said Mayor Ron Serpico. "Entering Melrose Park, one returns to a time when neighbors talked over the fence and moms watched out for each other's children. Our tree-lined streets are populated with well-manicured homes and a real sense of Americana."

The study released by Nerd Wallet Finance ranks Melrose Park as the second fastest growing city in Illinois, with a population growth of 20.4 percent from 2009-2012. City planners predict the population will increase another 61 percent by 2030 to almost 30,000 residents. Most of that growth will be among young adults ages 20-30.

"What you notice upon entering Melrose Park is diversity," said Serpico. "Walk down any street and you're immersed in a tapestry of cultures, each with their unique language, food and customs. Melrose Park is a shining example of the ideal of the 'American Melting Pot.'"

Young adults and families are drawn to the many celebrations and festivals in Melrose Park. The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel has been celebrated every July for over 100 years and is the longest running festival in the Chicago area. The annual Hispanofest draws nearly 125,000 people. And every Labor Day weekend the Taste of Melrose Park draws hundreds of thousands of hungry patrons to the most family affordable food festival in all of Illinois.

Melrose Park residents enjoy some of the lowest water rates and property tax rates in the Chicago area. The crime rate is one of the lowest in the western Cook County suburban area. The village is one of the few suburban towns to have two hospitals, Gottlieb and Westlake. In addition, the business climate is one of the most favorable in Illinois.

"Melrose Park's nickname is 'Corporate King of the Suburbs' because companies like Wilson Sporting Goods, Benjamin Moore Paint, Jewel-Osco, Home Juice, Zenith, International Harvester, and Navistar have made or still call Melrose Park their home," said Serpico. "We are also one of the few towns to have Costco, Meijer, Target and Menards stores located within its village limits."
