CHICAGO (WFLD/FOX) - The "Windy City" beat out intense competition to become the new home for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

The museum will hold more than 500,000 pieces of art and movie memorabilia from Star Wars director George Lucas' personal archives.

Lucas chose Chicago over San Francisco and New York, who were also vying for the museum.

The planned location is a parking lot south of Soldier Field.

"This is a milestone for the city, but it's just one milestone on a journey as we build this new museum that is a part of the history, part of the cultural, educational legacy of the city that actually makes Chicago a unique place, a vibrant place for every neighborhood, every child and every family," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The earliest the museum would open is 2018.

Chicago resident Bill McMichael said the city was a better choice than the other options.

"It's got one of the densest areas, it's got the people to come and see it," McMichael said. "It's not all spread out like some of the other cities in the U.S. are."
