(FOX News) – Russian President Vladimir Putin is expressing support for Ukraine's declaration of a cease-fire. The tension between the conflicting sides has left countless dead and thousands fleeing for safety.

"I think a great tragedy is happening in Ukraine, people are dying every day," Putin said.

The conflict in Ukraine is showing no signs of coming to an end. The cease-fire between opposing sides has been called to try and end the bloodshed, but to no avail.

Now, President Putin is joining in on the call for peace, urging both sides to negotiate.

"The truce should result in dialogue between all conflicting sides so that a compromise acceptable to everyone can be found," Putin said.

The seven-day cease-fire announced by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Friday has not taken hold.

Ukraine's government accused separatists of attacking its military bases and posts on the Russian border the same day.

And days later, the fighting continues.

"What cease-fire?" Pro-Russian separatist Bakhtiyar Kamalov said. "What cease-fire? Yesterday they battered us all. They battered us all. I have seen a drone, for the first time in my life I've seen a drone.''

The turmoil has sent thousands fleeing to the Russian border. Some are looking to leave the region for good, while others say they plan to return home and just want a break from the fighting.

"We were told to run away because shelling would start," a man said. "So we are running away, what else to do. Maybe we'll go in the morning."

In response to the tension, the United Nations says it is working with its G7 partners to prepare for further economic sanctions against Russia.

That is if Moscow fails to take actions to stop the flow of arms and militants across the border and do more to influence the separatists to lay down their arms.
