WASHINGTON, DC (FOX) - With Islamist militant group ISIS taking control over several major cities in Iraq, President Barack Obama announced the U.S. administration's next move on Thursday.

After meeting with his national security team, the commander in chief said the U.S. will get more involved.

Some congressional Republicans are urging Obama to launch airstrikes to weaken ISIS, also referred to as ISIL, but Obama said American forces will not go there for active combat.

"American forces will not be returning to combat in Iraq, but we will help Iraqis as they take the fight to terrorists who threaten the Iraqi people, the region, and American interests as well," Obama said.
