Police have identified the woman rescued Thursday after a car struck her horse-drawn carriage.

According to Newport Police Officer Keith Pfefferman, Tina Hemingway of Elegant Carriage was operating the carriage on the Taylor Southgate Bridge. A Pontiac Grand Am tried to pass the carriage but inadvertently struck it from behind.

The carriage flipped over from impact and Hemingway was tossed out of the seat, almost falling off the bridge. She landed on a support beam and stayed there until Pfefferman arrived.

Pfefferman got to the scene two minutes after the 911 call.

Officers pulled Hemingway to safety and she was taken to a hospital with reported serious injuries and is undergoing surgery today.

The horse suffered cuts to its hind legs but was otherwise uninjured.

The driver of the car has not yet been charged but charges may be filed pending the results of the investigation.
