LAS VEGAS (AP) -

U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford has defeated two Democratic challengers in a primary election victory for the 4th Congressional District.

The state's first black U.S. representative topped two little-known Democrats in the sprawling district that includes urban North Las Vegas as well as vast stretches of rural Nevada.

The well-funded Democratic incumbent awaits the winner of a close Republican primary contest between establishment-backed Cresent Hardy, tea party strategist Niger Innis and two other candidates.

Innis and Hardy had raised nearly identical amounts of money ahead of Tuesday's contest, and had tried to bolster their conservative credentials during four debates.

Hardy is a two-term state assemblyman from Mesquite and a fifth-generation Nevadan.

Innis, who is black, is a national spokesman for the Congress on Racial Equality.
