GWANGJU, SOUTH KOREA (FOX) - Fifteen crew members from the South Korean sunken ferry pled their case before a judge on Tuesday.

All of this while family members of the hundreds of people who died in the disaster protested outside.

A representative for the families of the victims is calling for the death penalty for the crew.

The captain and three other crew members have been charged with homicide.

Prosecutors are accusing the crew of abandoning the ship while knowing the passengers would be trapped and killed when the ship sank.

The captain and his crew meantime allege they did all they could to help the passengers.

Two months after the sinking, 292 bodies have been recovered and 12 people are still missing.

Relatives of victims of the Sewol ferry disaster protested outside Gwangju District Court, where the ferry crew is having a preliminary hearing. Police guarded the court while relatives were sitting on a road during a protest.

Relatives held placards saying, "Our children wait for you murderers," and "Our children's souls are watching you."

They also chanted, "Come out if you are not ashamed, come out."
