GREENFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Two teenagers admitted to stealing nearly 30 mailboxes and throwing them off an Interstate-91 overpass after detectives found a fast food receipt and were able to trace it to them, according to Greenfield police officials.

During their investigation, police located a receipt from a local fast food establishment and they were able to identify the suspected vehicle using the businesses' video surveillance system.

An off-duty officer noticed that vehicle parked outside of a local store, and after a short investigation the suspects were identified and they admitted to the crimes, police said.

There were reports that two excavators had their windows smashed out on the same evening, which the teens also allegedly confessed to.

The investigation started when officers responded to the Wisdom Way Bridge overpass at about 4 a.m. Monday after getting a report that some kids were tossing rocks off the overpass onto the highway below.

The kids were gone by the time police arrived, but 29 damaged mailboxes were recovered. Some had been flattened by vehicles, but police did not receive reports of accidents or injuries.

The mailboxes had been stolen from neighborhoods in Greenfield and Deerfield. Residents who had their mailboxes stolen were told to go their respective departments to pick them up.

Police charged Sean Michael Bittner, 19, of 33 Laurel St., Greenfield, and Joshua Michael Acus, 18, of 8 Webster Ave., Greenfield, with trespassing with a motor vehicle, disorderly conduct, two counts of malicious destruction of property, and three counts of larceny under $250, police said.
