A Phoenix man arrested in the drowning of his 3-month-old son in a bathtub is being held on a $180,000 bond.
Carlos H. Castillo, 19, faces one count of second-degree murder and three felony counts of child abuse, according to court records.
Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Capt. Ruben Saavedra said 3-month-old Phoenix Castillo was in the tub with two siblings, ages 1 and 3, when the child went under the water in a home near Van Buren Street and 27th Avenue just before 11 a.m. Tuesday.
The child's grandmother went into the bathroom, found the baby unresponsive and called 911.
The bathtub was overflowing when first responders arrived.
The father was trying to render first aid, said Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump.
Emergency responders performed CPR and an ambulance took the infant to a pediatric hospital, where the child was in critical condition, Saavedra said. Several hours later, Phoenix police confirmed the baby had died.
Carlos Castillo told investigators he placed all three children in the bathtub with no water plug in and turned on the water, Crump said.
The father then went into another room and laid down with other adult family members who were sleeping, Crump said.
The father awoke some time later by a noise and water running outside the bathroom floor, Crump said.
Investigators have served a search at the home to gather evidence, Crump added.
Castillo is expected to be in court on June 18.
