(CNN) - According to the latest Department of Labor jobs report, the U.S. labor market is improving but a closer look at the numbers shows that men and women aren't sharing in that job growth equally.

New numbers show that men have nearly 700,000 fewer jobs now than when the recession began in December 2007. Meanwhile women have fared far better and recovered all their lost jobs last year.

Experts say men were hit harder during the recession, so it is taking longer to get those jobs back. This is especially true because many jobs, like those in male dominated fields like construction and manufacturing, may be returning in different ways or not coming back at all.

In contrast, experts say female dominated jobs, like education and health care, have been growing.

And that is expected to continue. Projections by the Labor Department predict most of the fastest growing jobs will continue to be in traditionally female-dominated roles.
