PHOENIX (CBS5) -

For once, ice is an ally of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Arpaio, who is often at odds with U.S. Immigrations and Custom Enforcement (ICE), said his staff will be doling out ice and ice-cooled towels to inmates of his outdoor Tent City Jail.

The nearly 1,000 men and woman incarcerated in Tent City will find water, ice, sunscreen and ice-cooled towels at various stations throughout the facility as temperatures have reached as high as 130 degrees during the recent Valley heat wave, Arpaio said on Wednesday.

The ice-cooled towels can be wrapped around an inmate's head or neck to help bring down body temperatures, he said.

Arpaio said electric fans are no longer permitted in Tent City because inmates damaged them beyond repair in the past.

He said temperatures in Tent City have reached as high as 141 degrees in the past, but heat-related illnesses among inmates have been few.

Tent City opened in August 1993.
