ATLANTA, GA (CBS46) -

A former Atlanta Public Schools chief information officer guilty of taking brides has been sentenced to nearly 3 1/2 years in federal prison.

Jerome Oberlton took about $60,000 in bribes from a Detroit firm for a $780,000 computer contract with the school district.

Prosecutors said Oberlton conspired with another man, Mahendra Patel, who was also found guilty.

Oberlton was APS's CIO between June 2004 and August 2007 and, most recently, was the chief of staff for the Dallas Independent School District before he resigned in May 2013, shortly after he was indicted.

Oberlton was sentenced Thursday to three years and five months in federal prison to be followed by three years of supervised release and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $735,130. He was convicted on these charges in January 2014 after he pleaded guilty.
