PINEY FLATS, TN (WJHL) -

A Tri-Cities man was sent to the hospital after police said his car caught fire after he ran into a building while trying to hit a patrol car.

It happened Thursday night in the parking lot of a business on Century Court in Piney Flats.

Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a report of a domestic assault.

According to law enforcement, when officers approached the suspect, 42 year old Patrick Fries, he drove through a nearby yard, crossed into a ditch and hit a power pole.

Deputies said he then drove back into the parking lot and straight toward an officer’s patrol car.

The officer was able to move his car in time, so Fries’ car crashed into the garage door of a business and caught fire.

Fries also made threats to the officer, saying he would kill the officer if the officer didn’t kill him first.

Fries climbed out of the window of his car and was taken to Johnson City Medical Center for his injuries.

When he’s released from the hospital, he’ll be taken to jail on charges of Aggravated Assault, Felony Vandalism, and Driving Under the Influence.
