Interim Phoenix VA director discusses his plans

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Steve Young, the man brought in to run the Phoenix VA Healthcare System after top officials there were placed on leave, talked to CBS 5 News' Donna Rossi about what he has seen in his first week on the job.

CBS 5 News' Donna Rossi: "In coming here, what's your biggest concern?"

Young: "Clearly, this is an unsettled time for the Phoenix VA Medical Center. The community clearly loves its veterans. The community clearly wants what's best for its veterans, as does the employees here. But there's that trust has been shaken. And our job right now, my job, is to help rebuild that, to help rebuild that trust."

Rossi: "What can you do to make sure inappropriate scheduling practices are not happening any more today if in fact they have been going on?"

Young: "I think that one of the things that we can do is that we can audit. We need to look over our shoulder and look over the shoulder of our employees and validate that we're doing the right thing."

Rossi: "How many open positions does Phoenix VA have right now?"

Young: "I don't know that number off the top of my head."

Rossi: "But you are understaffed?"

Young: "I think what we need to focus on is bringing in the right staff to be able to provide the best care for our veterans, and we're aggressively doing that."

Rossi: "Where is that needed most?"

Young: "I think that's needed in the primary care."
