Lower unemployment means more job opportunities for grads

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

For the Class of 2014, the job opportunities are better now than they've been in more than five years.

The Las Vegas unemployment rate dropped to 7.4 percent.

"This is the largest drop in the unemployment rate that we have seen since 2008," said Mae Worthey with the Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

DETR figures show that in April the unemployment rate in Las Vegas was 7.4 percent down from 8.7 percent in March.

For the thousands of graduating students at UNLV and CSN, the new, lower numbers are reason to be optimistic.

Robin Gonzales, who is graduating from UNLV with a bachelor's degree in political science, is hopeful she will find work quickly while waiting to get word on an internship in Washington DC.

"I'm looking for a job that will enhance my skills for law school, and at the same time give me earning potential," he said.

Jolanta Filipovic, who is graduating with an associate's degree in applied science, had no trouble finding work in the medical field.

"I was actually employed by a company last October," she said.

Filipovic said at least two of her classmates also have found employment while finishing up their degrees.

While the news on the job front is positive, Mae Worthey said there is a long way to go to get back to the unemployment numbers from 10 years ago.

"Things are a lot more hopeful than they were a couple of years ago when the prospects of getting a job were extremely low," she said.
