AZ ROC warns homeowners: Beware of unlicensed contractors

Posted: Updated:

It's a serious problem around the Valley and across the state - unlicensed contractors taking money for jobs they're not supposed to be doing.

The number of unlicensed contractors is on the rise.

In the first two months of this year, Arizona's Registrar of Contractors received 204 complaints about unlicensed contractors.

In March and April, it was 291.

AZ ROC Chief of Staff Tyler Palmer said that a lot of the questionable contractors will advertise as if they had a license, or they'll accept payment for a job and then never complete the work.

"They're just out there scamming people," said Palmer. "Making money and not doing any work.  In other words, there's theft and fraud and crimes going on."

State officials told CBS5 that they investigate every complaint that comes in, but it's up to the public to do their homework before hiring anyone to work on their house.

Here are five things homeowners should know:

* Verify that a contractor is licensed on the ROC website.

* Get three bids for every job.

* Make sure all contracts and payment schedules are in writing.

* Get references from past clients.

* Don't pay cash. You always want documentation for any payment you make.
