Henderson launches pool safety campaign

HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

Just in time for high temperatures in the 90s this weekend, the city of Henderson has launched its annual Safe Pools Rule campaign. The objective is zero drownings this year.

"Tragically, pools are the first or second leading cause of death in young children," said Henderson firefighters Dan Pentkowski.

Last year's program objective was reached - there were no drownings reported in Henderson.

On Thursday firefighters started canvassing homes, talking to neighbors and leaving behind door hangers reminding everyone of the A,B,C & Ds of water safety.

"It takes literally seconds for a child to slip away and moments toward where they begin to slip under water," said Pentkowski.

The A,B,C and Ds of water safety include adult supervision, barriers around pools, classes such as swimming lessons, and devices for safety, including flotation devices.

As many as 8,000 homes will be visited by Henderson firefighters, Red Cross volunteers and lifeguards over the next few weeks to remind everyone of the dangers associated with pools.
