Fear over possible threats to Chesterfield's Cosby High School have mounted all week. The person behind the message that ignited the firestorm is now speaking out. The message, "Get ready to take action. Justice for Cal. 5-1-14" was found written near the tunnel where Cosby Senior, Cal Reilly, committed suicide, last year.
Word of the writing spread quickly through Cosby High School and social media. Police investigated rumors of bomb threats and other acts, but nothing was found.
A loved-one of the 17-year-old says she wrote the message, and her intention was never malicious. The woman asked NBC12 to conceal her identity, out of fear of backlash. She says her meaning quickly became twisted.
"It just goes to show you that something so positively meant can spin into something so terrible and threatening... to the degree that I'm worried about myself and my kids. It's very frightening," said the loved-one.
Cal's loved-one says her idea of "justice" is much different than what rumors spiraled into.
"Read it as I intended it, which is ‘justice for Cal.' We're going to fix the past and make sure it doesn't happen again in the future, to the best of our ability," continued the woman.
May 1st is the day when the woman planned to launch a fundraising campaign, selling t-shirts in Cal's memory.
The money would go to suicide prevention. However, instead, her message was interpreted as violent. "I started getting text messages and phone calls…saying that there were threats of violence, and bomb threats, and people worried about guns, and shootings…"
Even though the loved-one can't express enough that she didn't mean any harm by it, she's still concerned about what could happen on 5-1-14.
"The last thing I wanted was anyone to get hurt tomorrow, and I'm surprised and disappointed that it has gone in that direction," added the loved-one.
Chesterfield schools and police aren't commenting on whether there will be upped security at Cosby High School Thursday. She also says police encouraged her to speak out, to help ease concerns.
